Windows Server: How to rename computer using command line?

Command line tool ‘Netdom’ can be used to rename a computer in a domain. It is particularly useful for Server Core version of Windows Server 2008 as there is no GUI option with it.


Run the below command to rename the server:

Netdom renamecomputer %computername% /newname: SERVER20

You will be asked to press Y to complete the rename process.

Instead of SERVER20, you can add the new name that you wish to give to your server.


The below screenshot shows the output of the command:


After pressing ‘Y’ the command will be completed successfully. But you have to restart the machine to complete the rename process. Use the below command line to restart the machine:

Shutdown –r –t 0
